STATEMENT describing current practice

At the foundation of my work lies a strong sense of wonder about the fragility of life, wonder about the working of one’s memory, about the visible and the invisible. About how you remember your history, how you renew it and imagine it. These questions form the basic tones of my body of work. All of this is regularly conveyed by means of all kinds of elements that branch off from the whole. Sometimes, these are patterns that remind one of bloodstreams, but it could just as well be bundles of cables or city plans. Or other structures. So I often use branched or lace like structures as a metaphor for physical roots and memories, fanning out thoughts, and a fascination for nature. My work consists of sculptures, drawings, embroidery, video works and installations. I like to use textile materials as well as metal, wood, plaster, and so on. The choice of material depends on the concept. In commission I made fences, walls, floors, ceilings, seats. Sometimes with a recognizable detail, often with a function in everyday life.

Het werk „Cells” vindt z’n oorsprong in verwondering over- en fascinatie voor natuur en leven.

Zit de blauwdruk van ongewervelde dieren of eencelligen – zijn DNA – als een geheugen opgeslagen in zijn contouren?
Deze vraag stelde Karola Pezarro zich toen zij gefascineerd raakte door fragmenten uit tekenbladen van Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919), Duits zoöloog en filosoof en tijdgenoot van Darwin.
Een eeuw geleden bestudeerde Haeckel oa de ongewervelde dieren uit de diepzee. Wonderlijke wezens die nog nooit iemand had gezien. Zijn werk deed in die tijd vele vragen rijzen: heeft de schepping een gevoel voor esthetiek? Ligt in de natuur de  oorsprong van schoonheid verborgen?

Pezarro geeft in dit werk haar eigentijdse vertaling van deze eencelligen, waar het leven misschien ooit mee begon. De rand van elke cirkel bestaat steeds uit een aura van blokjes in verschillende tinten, als een dna-code voor de eindeloze variatie van levende organismen.
